About The Publication

The optimal number of working hours in the labor-intensive industry is important to identify the best productivity rate and decrease errors. This research examines the impact of the working hours on the error rate and productivity for three shifts and variability among the shifts in a surface protection manufacturing process. The measurement was taken from the real process and data were analyzed using statistical tools. A strong correlation was found among three-shift productivities. The results showed that there is a slight increase in productivity after the lunch break for all three shifts. A significant difference in productivity has been observed between the first hour and the rest of the day for each shift. The best productivity yield was observed between the 2nd and 7th hour, indicating that longer working hours are less productive and the error rate is increasing. The error rate has a strong positive correlation in the first shift, moderate in the second shift, and weak in the third shift.

Electronics Cooling Using Phase Change Materials: An Experimental Study

https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-031-71694-2_63

This study investigates the effectiveness of utilizing Phase Change Material (PCM) for cooling electronic devices, particularly a phone charger. A series of experiments were conducted in a laboratory environment to compare conventional air-cooled methods with PCM-cooled methods. Temperature histories of the environment, the box containing the electronics, and the surface of the charger using a LabQuest 2 data logger were recorded for electronics cooling, both with and without PCM under the same environmental conditions. To determine the significance of temperature differences between air-cooled and PCM-cooled electronics, the recorded data were statistically analyzed using a t-test. It was observed that PCM-cooled setups achieved significantly lower average temperatures compared to traditional air-cooled electronics. Particularly, immersing the charger in RT27 PCM led to a temperature reduction of 3.5 ℃, which is significantly lower compared to the conventionally air-cooled electronics. These findings highlight the potential of PCM for enhancing electronics cooling efficiency and suggest further exploration regarding the integration of PCM into electronics.

About The Publication

The aim of this research was the development of an energy-efficient composite material based on straw and phase change material (PCM). Straw-based composites are good thermal insulators but do not have the ability to store energy. PCMs are proven in energy storage and temperature regulation and have the ability to store and release significant thermal energy during phase transitions. The research was experimental in which four groups of samples were prepared, with different compositions of binders and incorporation of PCM. The samples were tested using the hot-guarded plate method and thermal conductivities were determined. The results showed that straw-based composites with PCM are promising and can lead to sustainable construction solutions, offering improved thermal performance. Statistical analysis confirmed that the addition of PCM to the straw-based composite insignificantly changed the thermal conductivity but improved the heat storage capacity of the composite.

About The Publication

https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11665-024-09570-9

Residual stress is responsible for various engineering failures in cases where the magnitude of residual stress exceeds the ultimate strength. With the aim of minimizing the residual stress induced in the machining of AISI 1045 steel, different machining parameters (speed, feed, depth of cut) and the output variables were experimentally investigated in this research. Series of specimens were produced using different machining parameters, and the residual stress in each was measured. When a material is subjected to external forces or thermal treatments, residual stresses can be introduced due to changes in the lattice spacing of the material. These changes in lattice spacing are detected using a non-destructive method based on the x-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. The equipment used is iXRD with MGR40P- Stress measurement system, PROTO CANADA make. The PROTO XRDWIN 2.0 software was an integral part of the XRD machine, which records all the necessary data, calculations and provides the user with surface residual stresses values. Data analysis and the process parameters were optimized using Taguchi L9 orthogonal design of experiments. To determine the effects of the machining parameters on residual stress, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used. The results indicate that the feed rate is only statistically significant parameter on the residual stress with the largest main effect. The optimal setup of machining parameters that cause the lowest residual stress of − 145.4 MPa was identified, with a speed of 710 m/min, a feed of 80 mm/min, and a DOC of 0.2 mm.

Advances in thermal energy storage: Fundamentals and applications

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0360128523000394?via%3Dihub

Thermal energy storage (TES) is increasingly important due to the demand-supply challenge caused by the intermittency of renewable energy and waste heat dissipation to the environment. This paper discusses the fundamentals and novel applications of TES materials and identifies appropriate TES materials for particular applications. The selection and ranking of suitable materials are discussed through multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) techniques considering chemical, technical, economic and thermal performance. The recent advancements in TES materials, including their development, performance and applications are discussed in detail. Such materials show enhanced thermal conductivity, reduced supercooling, and the advantage of having multiple phase change temperatures (cascade PCMs). Nano-enhanced PCMs have found the thermal conductivity enhancement of up to 32% but the latent heat is also reduced by up to 32%. MXene is a recently developed 2D nanomaterial with enhanced electrochemical properties showing thermal conductivity and efficiency up to 16% and 94% respectively. Shape-stabilized PCMs are able to enhance the heat transfer rate several times (3–10 times) and are found to be best suited for solar collector and PV-based heat recovery systems. Cascade and molten slats PCMs find their best applications in the thermal management of buildings and the power sector (concentrated solar plants). Microencapsulated, nanoPCMs and shape-stabilized PCMs effectively reduce the supercooling of hydrated salts. The recent trends of TES materials in various applications, including building, industrial, power, food storage, smart textiles, thermal management, and desalination are also briefly discussed. Finally, future research in advanced energy storage materials is also addressed in this study, which is intended to help create new insights that will revolutionize the thermal management field.

Thermal performance analysis of PCM solar wall under variable natural conditions: An experimental study

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S097308262300131X?dgcid=author

Low-carbon technologies are critical for mitigating climate change and achieving net-zero emission buildings. Phase change material (PCM) solar wall as a low-carbon technology is a passive heating/cooling system with the potential to cover a significant portion of building energy demand. To better understand the potential of PCM solar walls in different climates, further research into their performance is needed. This research is based on an experimental investigation of the performance of the Solar wall test cell in changing natural conditions for cold and warm seasons. A series of experiments were conducted in both seasons by recording the variation of exterior and interior temperature, as well as solar radiation. Statistical tools were used to analyze the influence of variations in external air temperature and solar radiation on the thermal characteristics of the solar wall in the cell. The results showed a significant difference between external and internal temperature variations for both seasons. Particularly, the wall had the potential during the heating season to maintain the temperature of the test cell above 20 °C for up to 7 h, while in the cooling season, it is observed that the wall keeps room temperature for about 17 h within the comfort range.

Cybersecurity challenges in Industry 4.0: A state of the art review

https://journals.ardascience.com/index.php/dss/article/view/188

Cybersecurity is an important topic for Industry 4.0, which will face a lot of non-traditional challenges before it can be fully implemented to help society. The objective of the study is to recognize recent cybersecurity trends, newly occurring threats and challenges as well as their potential solutions. The articles reviewed in the paper are found through science direct, Scopus, Semantic scholar and google scholar. After reviewing them, ideas from articles were grouped together to show how different articles had similar thoughts. Through the analysis of 70 articles, it was found that cybersecurity still needs a lot of improvement in order to efficiently implement Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), especially since many articles underline the need for security-by-design approach, followed by regular updating. Key challenges are lack of awareness and security experts, increased cybercriminal and the fact that the chain is as only as strong as its weakest point. Some of the most important solutions include incorporating security into design, stronger encryption, regular updates to patch vulnerabilities and good prevention and detection mechanisms. Once cybersecurity challenges are overcome, Industry 4.0 will be able to bloom to its full extent.

Building energy demand management strategies and methods

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/B9780323995887000079?via%3Dihub

Demand-side management offers great opportunities to use building energy flexibility to significantly reduce building operational costs. Various management strategies can be applied to mitigate the energy demand of buildings and improve their energy efficiency. The key strategy is to move to on-demand consumption instead of on-demand generation. This strategy is usually based on some types of energy storage, such as the thermal mass of a building (e.g., building structures, building parts, or modules), where excess energy is stored and released on demand to the interior. To improve the energy efficiency of buildings, this chapter provides valuable insights into different management options and methods suitable for different types of buildings. This will be an important source of the information for future research and professionals in this field.

Human capital and youth emigration in the “new normal”

Every society's future lies in its youth, which can be considered a critical milestone for a nation's sociopolitical development. This research examines the young population attempting to identify and explores the students' perceptions about migration, their postulates, and the reasoning why so many students ultimately choose to emigrate. Data were collected in a questionnaire survey of 206 randomly selected students from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Some different multivariate analyses were performed to test the hypotheses. Other results were further discussed. Results show that the country's legal framework is a key reason for the prevailing poor living standard. This has resulted in a large number of youths leaving the country. Overall, both the legal framework (for both young entrepreneurs and women) and the overall standard of living (quality of life, well-being, salary, retirement, and education) are correlated with people choosing to emigrate. Furthermore, theoretical and practical implications are discussed. As far as we know, this is the first empirical study on this particular region that investigates the youth migration trends considered an important milestone for human capital development.

Thermal characterization of straw-based panels made out of straw and natural binders

This study investigates the possibility of using crop straw combined with natural binders as building construction material. The straw as a renewable material may have potential in reducing building energy demand. Four types of binders were used to produce composite panel samples. The Guarded Hot Plate method is used to characterize thermal properties and identify the best straw-binder mixture of the composite. The result showed that gypsum-based composite showed the best thermal properties suggesting that straw-based composite panels can be used in light weighed building construction.

Performances Study of Natural and Conventional Building Insulation Materials

http://ijaseit.insightsociety.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=9&Itemid=1&article_id=11139

This research aims to investigate the performances of thermal insulation materials using a comparative analysis. Particularly, the performances of natural insulation materials are compared with performances of non-renewables (petrochemical and inorganic), such as thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, global warming potential, and cost. In the past twenty years, the interest for the research on building energy demand reduction has been increased rapidly. Buildings were identified as a significant contributor to global energy consumption and global warming through the heating and air-conditioning systems. The literature observed that building energy demand takes up to 40% of the global energy consumption. Trends in addressing this issue are based on better thermal insulation of building envelope or using more energy-efficient materials. To carry out this research, the data were collected based on published research and comparatively analyzed. It was found that natural insulation materials have a significantly lower impact on global warming, longer useful lifetime, competitive thermal properties, better fire resistance, and favorable cost. Future trends and developments in reducing building energy demand would rely on sustainability. Sustainability is based on renewable natural resources, including renewable insulation materials, but if combined with significant participation of PCMs for latent heat energy storage, it will provide much better results. To get sustainable technologies applicable in full scale in the future, the overall problem has to be investigated, including user training and addressing the future workforce's challenges.

Modelling the effect of feed rate on residual stresses induced due to milling using experimental and numerical methods

The surface integrity of any manufactured product produced in machining process has proved to have a significant impact on the performance of the product. Many parameters influence the integrity of the surface, few of which are microstructure of the material, surface roughness, residual stresses etc. Out of which the present work focuses on the residual stress of the machining, which majorly effects the fatigue strength of the product. Understanding the significance of residual stresses in machining, and influencing it using three basic parameters: feed, cutting speed and depth of cut to increase the products performance and life by optimizing these measures to best possible combination. It is done using both experimental and numerical methods and authors have compared the numerical and experimental values. For experimental purposes AISI 1045 steel was used and the residual stresses measurement was done using X-ray diffraction method.

Thermal characterization of straw-based panels made out of straw and natural binders

http://pen.ius.edu.ba/index.php/pen/article/view/1813

On global level there is a large supply-demand imbalance for the worker with the right set of skills. Similarly, it is observed in Bosnia as well. Even though the unemployment rate is high in the country, the industry is struggling to get talents they need from the local market. On the other hand, the job seekers are rather preferring to look for job opportunities in EU countries since the packages of benefits are more attractive there. Bosnian industry is mainly based on labor intensive business and it is focused on lower cost as competitive advantage. Using this competitive advantage, the industry generates insufficient added value to offer competitive package of benefit to demanded talents from the global labor market. They have to switch to a new competitive advantage on differentiated unique solutions to target groups that will provide them with increased added value.

Panelist at “Innovation, technology and economy” panel

Dr. Durakovic was invited by the Foreign Trade Chamber of Bosnia to speak on a panel “Innovation, technology and economy“, which was a part of a conference “Media and Economy” organized by The Foreign Trade Chamber of Bosnia, University of Mostar and Večernji list. The panel session was held on May 22, 2019. in Mostar within the 18th edition of the Večernjak Seal manifestation. The aim of the panel was to merge theoretical knowledge and practice and to emphasize the importance of innovations for survival in the market.

Dr. Durakovic emphasized the importance of innovations as key success factors for local business in upcoming period. Since we have become part of the global marketplace and that global companies compete for our engineers, the local business with the existing business model is not competitive at all in the sense of attracting new and retaining existing experts. He concluded that innovations are opportunity for the domestic market to become more attractive to local experts. Innovations create significant added value that provide competitive benefits to employees, which create better social standards. Therefore, domestic business has to start offering knowledge intensive solution (not labor intensive) ASAP,  has to stop be part of someone’s else solution, otherwise they will not have bright future.
